In the Company of Color (and Erum)

Hello Crafty Friends!

As part of the AECP Level 3, I recently took “Creative Coloring with Erum — Advanced Techniques”—a brilliant class by the incredibly talented Erum Tasneem, whose artistry and creativity never fail to inspire me. She’s also personally responsible for several Paint-a-Flower Stamp Sets finding their way into my collection—but truly, who could resist after watching her work her magic?

Watercolored Poppy and Background
Watercolored Poppy and Background

For this project, I reached once again for Altenew’s Watercolor Coloring Book and chose a single poppy surrounded by delicate leaves. Although the image had lines, I approached it as if it didn’t—channeling my inner no-line watercolor rebel. My goal was to give the flower depth and dimension so it would stand out proudly against a background that was, let’s say, enthusiastically lively.

The background itself became a joyful experiment in smooshing, splattering, and partial watercolor stamping, using the same colors as the flower and foliage, with a touch of Tree Bark and Winter Fog for contrast. Once dry, I embossed the panel — minus the poppy, which means several passes through the die cutting machine — with the Angled Mosaic 3D Embossing Folder and brushed Antique Gold ink across some of the raised areas—just enough to catch the light.

To finish, I shaped the poppy petals with a stylus—some from the back, others from the front—to create even more movement and dimension. A few delicate pencil details and some final violet and black splatters brought everything together.

The card with just a few splatters? That wouldn't be a fitting tribute to Erum!

The result? A one layer card — well almost, I popped up a die-cut thanks from the Script Words 2 Die Set —  with a single bloom full of depth, color, and life, set against a background that celebrates texture and play. I can only hope Erum sees even a hint of her magic reflected here. And if not—well, at least my ever-growing stamp collection stands as solid proof of her creative influence. So here’s to the joy of painting in good company!
